Network protocol analysis with capture import, dissection, and filtering. Capture conditions, interface, snapshot length, packet loss, encryption, and dissector version affect what is visible.
What was captured at this observation point, rather than what happened everywhere on the network?
A display filter changes what the analyst sees, not what the source capture contains. A capture filter can exclude traffic before it enters the evidence file. Endpoint names, resolved addresses, and reconstructed conversations can add interpretation that should remain distinguishable from packet bytes.
Preserve a reproducible analysis
Keep original captures and capture metadata, capture-tool settings, clock basis, interface context, loss counters where available, and the analysis version. Preserve a record of filters or exports used to support a finding. An exported subset is a derivative, not the complete original capture.
A useful validation question
Use a known exchange captured under representative conditions. Compare display-filter results with the underlying packet set and inspect how reassembly or missing packets changes interpretation. Corroborate a material identity claim with independent system records.
