A framework for extracting events from supported sources for timeline examination. Parser selection, preprocessing, source format, and release affect what can be extracted.
What source event does this normalized timestamp describe?
A combined event table can place unlike timestamps next to each other: file modification, application activity, export, and receipt times are not interchangeable. Keep producer semantics and raw time basis connected to the normalized display. Repeated observations can also originate from one underlying event.
Preserve a reproducible analysis
Keep the source material, extraction settings, parser errors, storage output, export parameters, and version details. Preserve raw timestamp fields when available and document conversions. A sorted CSV alone may omit the provenance needed to reproduce an event.
A useful validation question
Test relevant parsers with known source records and boundary conditions, such as ambiguous time zones or unsupported variants. Compare extracted values with native structure documentation. Confirm that errors and skipped files remain visible in the workflow.
