Metadata reading and writing across supported formats. For examination, separate inspection on a working copy from any transformation or writing workflow.
Which metadata container produced this value, and how does it relate to the file?
Different metadata groups can carry similar field names or conflicting values. A displayed capture time may have a different basis from filesystem times or an application export time. Metadata can support a history claim but rarely identifies a creator or establishes that a depicted scene occurred.
Preserve a reproducible analysis
Preserve the received bytes and a hash before inspection. Record tool version, output format, relevant options, metadata group names, and any warnings. Keep the full output needed to distinguish duplicated or similarly named fields. Treat transformed media as a derivative with its own provenance.
A useful validation question
Use known files containing relevant metadata groups and ambiguous values. Compare the underlying format or an independent reader. Test whether a display or export normalizes a value or omits a field. A readable metadata field does not authenticate its contents.
