A Security log clear record supports the conclusion that the system recorded a clearing event. It does not independently establish who was at the keyboard, why the log was cleared, or whether all relevant evidence is gone. Treat the recorded subject as an account context that needs corroboration.
Source and platform scope
Microsoft’s Event 1102 documentation describes the event generated when the Windows Security audit log is cleared and the subject fields associated with the operation. The linked page is in Microsoft's previous-versions documentation. Its XML example and field descriptions are a reference point; confirm applicability on the examined build and collection path before making a current-version claim.
Preserve the record and its context
Keep the native event source when available, the acquisition log, and a working export for analysis. Record the host, channel, operating-system build, collector, time of collection, and the visible record range. An export can omit channel context or render a time differently from the underlying value. Keep those distinctions in the examination notes.
Corroboration that changes the interpretation
- Compare the subject identifiers and relevant session records, recognizing that an account may be shared, automated, or compromised.
- Compare centralized copies and endpoint records for the same period. A local gap and a remote gap have different collection explanations.
- Review authorized maintenance, retention settings, and other changes affecting collection. A legitimate administrative action can produce a clearing event.
- Keep the raw event time and the display time zone. Compare independent activity before and after the event rather than assuming every host clock agreed.
Absence is weaker than a matching record
If no clearing record is available, first document the collection scope and record retention. A missing event in a partial export does not prove that clearing never occurred. A clearing event also does not reveal the contents of records no longer available locally. Remote copies or other artifacts may survive.
Continue the examination
- Windows Defender Logs
Compare product records with the Security channel; each has its own coverage.
- Log Gaps
Evaluate rollover and collection gaps before describing suppression.
- Corroborate the timeline
Retain time uncertainty and independent sources.
- Intent Analysis Limits
Keep identity and intent claims separate from system observations.
