Text recovered from Notepad session state can matter even when no matching saved document is available. The supported first claim is that the collected session artifact contains that text under the examination method. Whether the text was saved to a named file, sent elsewhere, or composed by a particular person requires additional evidence.
Establish the application behavior and build
Microsoft’s August 2023 Notepad announcement introduced session-state preservation for Notepad version 11.2307.22.0 in an Insider rollout. Microsoft distinguishes restoration of open tabs and unsaved edits from changes to saved files. The announcement explains the feature's purpose; it does not publish a stable forensic specification for every binary cache field or guarantee behavior across later releases.
Record Windows build, Notepad package version, relevant profile, application settings available in the collection, and collection time. A newer operating-system label alone does not identify the installed Notepad application build. Keep source evidence of version and settings with the case notes rather than relying on a screenshot of the analyst's own computer. Notepad++ is a different product; this guide's Microsoft Notepad session-state findings do not establish how Notepad++ stores or restores documents.
Read the original research as a bounded source
The site's Reading the Notepad Tab Cache article links original code and discusses observations of tab-state files. Its quoted research includes tentative interpretations and workarounds. Preserve that distinction: an observation about a tested sample, an author's hypothesis, and a confirmed field definition are different levels of support.
The owned Anti-Forensics/get_notepad repository describes exporting tab-cache information to JSON. Repository existence and its stated purpose were checked for this guide. The program was not executed or validated here. If an examination relies on it, record the exact commit, dependencies, input selection, output, warnings, and a relevant validation result. Source availability is not proof of complete recovery.
Preserve three object identities
| Object | What it represents | What remains separate |
|---|---|---|
| Collected tab-state files | Application session material in the acquired profile. | Meaning of each field and completeness of the collection. |
| Saved document | The acquired bytes at a documented file location. | Whether they equal the text visible in an open tab. |
| Parser JSON or text export | A derived interpretation produced by a specific method. | The original files and the transformation history. |
Retain the full acquired companion set and directory context where available, with filenames, sizes, hashes, and errors. Work from documented copies. Reopening a profile in Notepad can change the operational state; it should not replace examination of the preserved source. Label partial or recovered fragments separately from complete supported structures.
Compare content before interpreting a filename
A displayed filename may help identify a candidate saved document. Verify it against the underlying field and the actual collected file. Compare content, encoding, line endings, and relevant surrounding metadata. An unsaved tab or changed open buffer can differ from disk content without contradiction. A stale path does not prove the target document still existed at acquisition.
Keep timing uncertainty visible. Filesystem times of a cache, a parser's export time, and a document's recorded modification time describe different events. None independently supplies an exact time for each typed sentence. A shared or accessible user profile also cannot by itself identify the human author.
Use evidence that can distinguish the alternatives
Compare independently preserved document versions, application-related records, and authorized service or recipient records if transmission is at issue. Text may have been pasted, restored, generated, or edited by more than one person; content familiarity alone does not resolve authorship. State what was compared and what remains unavailable.
For a disputed passage, retain enough surrounding text to show its relationship to the tab, while controlling access to unrelated private material. Record whether punctuation, line breaks, or missing characters came from the source or an export conversion. A readable reconstruction should remain distinguishable from verbatim source bytes and from an analyst's interpretation.
