Configuring Opera 9.6 with Tor
« on: April 15, 2009, 12:57:56 PM »
Install Opera and run. Go to the "Preferences" setting and follow these instructions.

In the Preferences you will see an array of configuration options from the top left Tab, "General" to the top right Tab "Advanced".

In "General", your "Startup" option should be set to "Start with blank page". This can be set to your own preference but use your best judgment. I set mine for "blank" and used http://config.privoxy.org/ as my home page. Once set I can click the "Home" button to easily check if Privoxy (A local proxy for Tor) is working. Set "Pop-ups" to "Block all pop-ups".

Uncheck the box "Let the Wand remember passwords". Also, just in case, do not fill in these fields asking for personal information.

On the "Advanced" Tab there are sections on the left column. We'll begin with "Tabs". Once again this is mostly personal preference settings.

Browsing
On "Loading" you should have it set to "Redraw after 1 second". This allows Opera to display the web page as it loads (every second). Higher settings, such as "Redraw when loaded" will show a blank page until the entire web page has been sent to your system.

"Page Icons" should be set to "Show no icons". Favicons and Icons are potentially dangerous.

Notifications
If you want Opera to make irritating sounds while you browse then you can configure it here. I do not like sounds and have unchecked the box named "Enable program sounds". Obvious?

All of the check-boxes below should be unchecked with the exception of these, which are optional
[✓] Show notification for blocked pop-ups
[✓] Show notification for finished transfers

Content
Uncheck ALL of these boxes. These features can also be manipulated from the quick config menu under Tools/Quick Preferences or "F12".

Fonts

Time for some real adjustments...

Downloads
This section is the most important.
Each "MIME-Type" item must be configured individually. What you see are items that are either downloaded or opened by calling external programs and plug-ins. In order to maintain strong anonymity each item must be set to "download" This prevents tricky tactics, such as video streaming, used to bypass your proxy/Tor, revealing your actual IP address. This will be a little time consuming at first but once you do a few or more the steps become simple and repetitious. Before you know it you'll be done! These images below will attempt to show you how to do it.

Start by double-clicking on the first listed MIME Type... A new window will appear. All you need to do is check the box named "Show download dialog" and click "OK". Repeat this step for each MIME Type listed.

And the next one... (Just an example)

When you have completed all of them you can check your work by clicking "OK" to save and close the Preferences window.
Open "Preferences" again, click the Tab "Advanced" and then "Downloads" on the left column. The "MIME type" window should be empty, like the image below. If it isn't, double-click each "MIME type" and set it to "Show download dialog" and close. Reopen Preferences/Advanced/Downloads to re-check your work

**Note: This section, "Downloads", must be checked periodically as plug-ins for your main browser may also install in Opera. If any do they will be listed here but must be configured using the above procedure.

.... moving on

Programs

History
This section can be configured many different ways depending on many contingencies. In a simple and effective way to prevent any blunders of evidence found in disk cache or through forensics- this could be set accordingly...
Addresses=0
Uncheck [ ] Remember content on visited pages
Memory Cache set to "Automatic"
Disk Cache set to "Off"
Check documents set to "Always"
Check images set to "Always"

Another option to use is contingent to third party programs that have the ability to safely wipe Opera's history. If you have one, like CCleaner it would be OK to keep some cache and web pages but a good practice would be to run your wipe program when done browsing. Whatever you decide just choose the safe route.

Cookies
Simply select "Never accept cookies"

Security
Uncheck "Enable Fraud Protection". (This will be an anon browser unable to run any scripts or programs so we won't need someone checking websites we visit to make sure they're safe.) No need for further adjustments in his section.

Network
Uncheck "Send referral information" and uncheck "Enable automatic redirection".

Now Click the button "Proxy Servers..." and a new window appears. Set up the "Proxy Servers" as you see it here. Use localhost and 8118. Check boxes accordingly. Click OK when your done.

Toolbars

It is safe to skip this section.

Shortcuts
Uncheck "Enable mouse gestures".

Click OK to close and save Preferences.

Configuration complete.

Restart Opera before using it or web pages will not load properly.

....end

Excellent on the downloads section, most people don't realize that there are techniques to reveal the true IP address of someone using the Tor network.

just watch out for this : http://www.eff.org/press/archives/2009/03/17

Ouch, "federal sentencing guidelines that would require extra prison time for people who use technology that hides one's identity or location..." I wonder if this means that if someone committed a crime from a network which directs all traffic through a proxy without their knowledge, if they would then get that "required" extra prison time? It appears that's what the EFF is trying to open the courts eyes to anyways.

Thank you!

Opera is the underdog of browsers but when coupled with Tor I have found it to be extremely dependable. Compared to Firefox, IMHO should never be torrified, it is absolutely superior.

There are other sections that can be changed through opera:config (typed in the address bar) that I intentionally left out because it is not necessary to cripple Opera beyond the instructions. It seems like overkill. For example, many people like to change the "User Agent" setting that allows Opera to report as I.E. or Firefox but I've yet to discover any real reason for spoofing it.

Anyway, over the last 5 years I have only seen one set of instructions for torrifying Opera which is long gone and out dated by now. I wanted to produce something that was up to date so others can use Tor with Opera as a safer alternative to Firefox and it's unsafe plug-in dependents.
